Environmental Engineering
5 self-contained study topics — notes, diagrams, formulas, and worked examples for exams and GATE.
Topics
- Water Supply EngineeringForecast the design-period population, multiply by the per-capita demand (135–180 LPCD) and a peak factor to get the design flows, then size the source, treatment train and distribution network for them.
- Wastewater CollectionEstimate the peak sewage flow (about 80% of water supply plus infiltration, times a peak factor), then size the sewer by Manning’s equation so the velocity stays between the self-cleansing minimum (0.6 m/s) and the scour-avoiding maximum (3 m/s).
- Biological Treatment UnitsDesign the aeration tank from the food-to-microorganism ratio F/M = QS_0/(VX), which fixes the tank volume for a given BOD load and mixed-liquor concentration, and check sludge settleability by the SVI.
- Air and Noise PollutionHandle noise on the logarithmic decibel scale (add sources by L_total = 10 log Σ10^(L_i/10)), and model air-pollutant dispersion with the Gaussian plume, using stack height and exit velocity to limit ground-level concentration.
- Solid Waste ManagementEstimate total waste from the per-capita generation rate times population, then plan the integrated system — segregation, collection, processing (composting/WTE) and sanitary landfilling of residuals with liner, leachate and gas control.
