Qwestrum — Career Profile
Lead Mechanical Engineer (Renewable Energy) | Renewable Energy & Manufacturing | Pune, India
Mechanical engineer who pivoted from automotive manufacturing into renewable energy. A real career story covers shop-floor years, late drawings, and what it really took to switch industries mid-career without an MBA.
Career advice rarely shows the messy parts. This is my attempt to make the path more honest for anyone considering it.
University of Cape Town — Education
Final-year project was a hybrid heat-exchanger design. Did a six-week intern in a factory that changed how I saw production lines.
Theory-heavy syllabus. Realising that real engineering involves more people than equations.
A CAD model is not a product. Tolerances on paper become expensive in steel.
Thermodynamics, CAD (SolidWorks), manufacturing processes, machine drawing, team projects
Mahindra & Mahindra — First Job
Joined Mahindra & Mahindra as a graduate engineer on the powertrain line. Long shifts, polite plant managers, demanding customers.
Found out how slow hardware iteration is compared to software. A revision could take six months to physically reach production.
Manufacturing rewards humility. Operators on the floor know things no engineer can simulate.
Closed 14 ECRs and saved ₹40 lakh annually through one tolerance redesign.
GD&T, FEA basics, BOM management, supplier coordination, lean manufacturing, audits
Mahindra & Mahindra — Promotion
Promoted into a senior design role with a small team and a bigger budget. Started owning customer escalations.
Politics around credit. Saying no to engineering shortcuts that would have wins now and recalls later.
Document decisions even when nobody asks. Your future self will need the trail.
ANSYS, project management, vendor development, mentoring juniors, customer-site visits
Suzlon Energy — Career Switch
Made the career change into renewables — wanted my engineering hours tied to something I would explain to my children. Took a flat title move for a steeper learning curve.
Industry vocabulary changed overnight. Imposter weeks were real.
Transferable skills are real, but you must articulate them — nobody will do it for you. Career transitions take 6-18 months to feel normal again.
Led the mechanical work-package on a 200MW wind farm completed on schedule.
If you want to switch industries, switch role first or industry first. Doing both at once is brutal.
Wind turbine design, structural fatigue analysis, project execution, regulatory compliance
