Qwestrum — Career Profile
District Collector (IAS) | Public Service | Delhi, India
Cleared UPSC on the third attempt. Writing about my real career journey — the failed attempts, the early postings, what running a district feels like at 31. Career story for the next aspirant who needs proof that civil service is not only for toppers.
My professional milestones are not extraordinary — and that is exactly the point. Steady careers deserve honest stories too.
Manipal University — Education
Chose Delhi for economics because UPSC was the goal from class 11. Joined a debating society to sharpen oral expression.
Distractions of an elite undergraduate environment. UPSC felt like a 7-year decision in a 3-year college.
Daily routine matters more than peak motivation. Hours visible to your roommate are real; hours nobody sees decide your future.
Macroeconomics, public finance, statistics, essay writing, debate
Self-study + coaching — Failure and Lesson
Two failed attempts. First — interview, no rank. Second — mains, three marks short. The hardest two years of my life.
Friends building careers while I lived in a hostel reading newspapers. Family hopes turned into expectations turned into pressure.
Resilience is built not in the attempts, but in the months between results.
Cleared third attempt with All India Rank 89. Chose IAS, Maharashtra cadre.
Discipline, syllabus mapping, mock-test analysis, financial frugality, mental resilience
Government of India — First Job
Foundation course at LBSNAA. First posting as SDM in a small district. Day one: 40 farmers waiting outside with grievances I had no procedural knowledge for.
Bureaucratic resistance to a young officer. Learning to be firm without being arrogant.
In government, listening is policy. Most decisions are 70% paperwork and 30% relationships you build over chai.
Land records, revenue administration, disaster response, public communication, local politics
Government of India — Promotion
Posted as District Collector of a 2.4 million-population district. Floods, elections, school enrolment drives — all in the same year.
Political pressure. Health of family in a different city. Burnout among my own team during the second wave.
Power is borrowed; impact is built. A district has long memory of officers — be remembered for the unspectacular work.
Civil service rewards stamina more than brilliance. Do not let coaching institute culture convince you otherwise.
Public administration, crisis management, scheme implementation, stakeholder management
