What is CAD in engineering?

CAD (Computer-Aided Design) is software used to create precise 2D drawings and 3D models of parts, assemblies, and buildings — the standard way modern engineers document and iterate designs.

Understand the concept

CAD replaces manual drafting on paper with parametric models. Changing one dimension can update an entire assembly. Common tools include AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA, Fusion 360, and Revit (for buildings).

CAD vs CAE

CAD focuses on geometry and documentation. CAE (Computer-Aided Engineering) adds simulation — FEA for stress, CFD for fluids, mold flow, and motion analysis. Many workflows link CAD models directly into CAE tools.
